IELTS Writing: Hướng dẫn viết discussion essay

Mến chào các em, trong bài tiếp theo trong chuỗi bài giảng luyện thi IELTS hôm nay, cô sẽ hướng dẫn các em cách nhận biết cũng như cách viết discussion essays, một trong những dạng essay phổ biến nhất trong bài thi IELTS WRTING. Chúng ta cùng vào bài.

Định nghĩa – discussion essay là gì?

Khác với argumentative essay, một bài discussion essay yêu cầu người viết phải thảo luận một vấn đề được đưa ra từ nhiều chiều khác nhau.

Phần 1: Cách nhận biết discussion essay

Ví dụ chúng ta có đề bài sau: Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Phân tích: Không chỉ riêng discussion essay, hầu hết các đề bài IELTS Writing task 2 luôn có 2 phần:

• Phần background: (Giống nhau ở hầu hết các đề bài) nêu lên nội dung sẽ discuss.
• Phần yêu cầu: (Khác nhau theo từng loại essay – dấu hiệu nhận biết chính) yêu cầu chính của đề bài – phần in đậm nghiêng gạch dưới

Theo đó nếu yêu cầu đề bài là:

• Discuss both these views…
• Discuss both views…
• Discuss both sides…

Thì đó là yêu cầu của một bài discussion essay.

Phần 2: Cách làm bài

Chúng ta dùng lại đề bài ở phần 1 nhé: Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Một bài IELTS discussion essay gồm 4 phần:

A/Phần mở bài (introduction, 2 – 3 câu):

• Paraphrase lại đề bài: 1 – 2 câu.
• Thesis statement (giới thiệu nội dung chính của toàn bài): Trả lời trực tiếp câu hỏi của đề bài.

Lưu ý: Đề bài yêu cầu chúng ta 2 vấn đề: 1 là discuss both these views và 2 là give your own opinion. Các em nên trả lời cả 2 yêu cầu này trong phần thesis statement; nếu không, giám khảo rất dễ hiểu nhầm rằng các em đã không đáp ứng đủ yêu cầu của đề bài. Trong trường hợp đó bài của các em sẽ không thể đạt trên band 5. (Đọc thêm)

Ví dụ: People have differing views with regard to the question of how to make our roads safer (paraphrase). In my view (own opinion), both punishments and a range of other measures can be used together to promote better driving habits (thesis statement).

B/ Phần thân bài (body, 2 đoạn văn, mỗi đoạn 5 – 7 câu) Ý chính của phần thân bài sẽ như sau:

• Body 1: Ích lợi của side 1: Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents.

Ví dụ: On the one hand, strict punishments can certainly help to encourage people to drive more safely (đừng quên câu topic sentence này nhé các em). Penalties for dangerous drivers can act as a deterrent, meaning that people avoid repeating the same offence. There are various types of driving penalty, such as small fines, licence suspension, driver awareness courses, and even prison sentences. The aim of these punishments is to show dangerous drivers that their actions have negative consequences. As a result, we would hope that drivers become more disciplined and alert that they follow the rules more carefully.

• Body 2: Ích lợi của side 2: Other measures would be more effective in improving road safety.

Ví dụ: On the other hand, I believe that safe driving can be promoted in several different ways that do not punish drivers. Firstly, it is vitally important to educate people properly before they start to drive, and this could be done in schools or even as part of an extended or more difficult driving test. Secondly, more attention could be paid to safe road design. For example, signs can be used to warn people, speed bumps and road bends can be added to calm traffic, and speed cameras can help to deter people from driving too quickly. Finally, governments or local councils could reduce road accidents by investing in better public transport, which would mean that fewer people would need to travel by car.

Các em lưu ý nhé: Dù là chúng ta đang thảo luận về điểm mạnh yếu của các ý được đưa ra, nhưng các em không nên đề cập đến những disadvantages của các sides vì thông thường những điểm mạnh của side thứ nhất sẽ là điểm yếu của side thứ hai. Do đó việc phân tích thêm các disadvantage ideas trong bài IELTS discussion essay nhưng vẫn phải đảm bảo phân tích đủ ý của các sides sẽ rất dễ làm cho bài của các em bị quá số từ cho phép và tốn thời gian.

Language: Cô chia sẻ với các em vài cụm từ hay dùng để liệt kê advantages nhé:

• The first/main/most advantage of ….is ….

Ex: The main advantage of fast food is its convenience.

• One/ another/an additional advantage of ….is ….
• What makes … stand out/important/… is …
• One/Another point in favor of ….is ….

Ex: Another point in favor of fast food is its convenience.

C/ Phần kết bài (conclusion, 1 – 2 câu) Paraphrase lại thesis statement và nêu lại quan điểm, ý kiến cá nhân đã đề cập trong bài

Ví dụ: In conclusion, while punishments can help to prevent bad driving, I believe that other road safety measures should also be introduced.

Phần 3: Bài mẫu hoàn chỉnh
